NEW CHAMPIONS TO BE CROWNED

AIB SENIOR CLUB FINAL

St.Ergnat’s, Moneyglass v Errigal Ciaran

Moneyglass won an Ulster junior title in 2003 and have dominated Antrim football in recent years however the Ulster Senior club title has eluded them. In their two games to date they have scored 7-15 and conceded 2-13.

The semi final was a much tougher affair when they were on the road again, this time in Lurgan for a meeting with the holders Clann Eireann. First half goals from Leah Stewart and Bronagh Devlin helped them to a 2-3 to 0-7 half time lead. Scores were hard to come by in the second half however when the final whistle sounded, Moneyglass were victorious 2-5 to 0-8.

Full back Niamh McIntosh will captain the side which contains a number of current and former Antrim players.

It was 18 years ago that Errigal Ciaran won their first and only Ulster senior club title. None of the current team were involved that day however many playing today have tasted recent Ulster minor success with the club. Reaching the final, the Errigal girls have had two tough away games, winning them by a goal and a point respectively.

Errigal Ciarán advanced to the semi-finals with a 2-10 to 1-10 win over Glenfin from Donegal. Goals from a Maria Canavan penalty and Aoife Horisk helped Errigal Ciarán lead by 2-5 to 1-4 at the break. In the semi final Lurgan led at the break by double scores, 0-8 to 0-4. Horisk and Canavan led the second half fight back which seen Canavan fire over the winner in the dying minutes.

Eimear Corrigan captains the side in which her sister Maebh also plays. It contains a number of Tyrone’s All Ireland winning team including Claire Canavan and Aoife Horisk who were recently named in the TG4 team of the championship.

Moneyglass will start as favourites having beaten the holders however Errigal’s two tough games to the final will stand to them.
