Corduff Prevail After Extra Time

Corduff 2-16 Cornafaen 2-14 AET


Corduff and Cornafaen left everything on the field in Augher but it was the Monaghan side who were victorious by the narrowest of margins. Just a point was the gap at the interval with Corduff leading 1-4 to 1-3. The first half goals were scored by Amy Wharton (penalty) and Barbara Ward. 


In the second half neither side would yield and frees were punished by the excellent Wharton (Cornafaen) and Eva Woods (Corduff). Kellie Johnston scored Cornafaen's second goal and when Declan Callaghan called a halt the sides were level Corduff 1-11 Cornafaen 2-8.


As light faded the extra time got underway and in the first period Cornafaen found a new star in Deirbhile Mc Caffrey whose 3 points helped them into a one point lead 2-12 to 1-14. The writing looked to be on the wall for the Monaghan champions as Cornafaen extended their lead in the second period of extra time but then Eilena Mc Enaney hit a cracking goal which was followed by a couple of points which seen the Black and Amber hold out for a two point win. 


Eva Woods who contributed 11 points was named player of the match. She did not however finish top scroer as Cornafaens midfielder Amy Wharton notched 1-9. Like Latton, Corduff now head across the water for an All Irleand quarter final.
